sightings

lost and found

I spend a lot of time in physical contact with the streets of Detroit.

One particular summer about 4 years ago, I started noticing that without conscious intention, I had memorized a constellation of rat carcasses along my daily bike routes through the city.

This is one of the unimaginably strange consequences of minimizing the time you spend insulating yourself from the world behind the walls of your car.

The initial photographs of the rats are grisly and fairly uninteresting, compositionally. I have excluded them from this set.

This collection represents the (mostly) softer casualties of the street that I began to notice following the rat thing. One particular rat appeared much later in my documentation, and I have chosen to include it on account of the overwhelmingly rare and spectacular circumstance of its death.

The photos here appear in chronological order. The vast majority of them were taken in Detroit, but not all.
